The Crete are identified in the area to the south-east of Siena, in the municipalities of Asciano, Monteroni d’Arbia, Buonconvento, Rapolano Terme, San Giovanni d’Asso, Trequanda .
The etymology of the name comes from clay, of which the area is very rich, and that gives the landscape its characteristic blue-gray color and its appearance sometimes described as “lunar”. In those barren hills, gently rolling, solitary cypress and oaks can be seen standing, as well as isolated farms in the top of the hills and reservoirs that collect rainwater.
The typical conformations of the land are the badlands, the ruffles and biancane. These formations are evident in the semi-arid zone called “Desert of Accona“.
In the area of the Crete Senesi you can admire the austere Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, founded by S.Bernando Tolomei in the thirteenth century.
